(male announcer) live from the kron 4 news station, this is the kron 4 news. >> the nation is mourning the death of so many young children at a connecticut elementary school. tory dunnan joins us from newtown with new information on the victims.

>>reporter:27 people were killed yesterday. most of them. children just 6 and 7 years old. we can now put names and faces to those killed at sandy hook elementary school. among them, 27-year- old first grade teacher, victoria soto. her family says she died trying to protect her students. robbie parker lost his daugter emilie. >> "she always had something kind to say about anybody. she is an incredible person and i am so blessed to be her dad." >>reporter: the state medical examiner said he believes all the children killed were first graders as police continue to search for evidence in every "crack and crevice" of the school, the community is trying to figure out just how to cope. " when tragedies like this occur, people often look for answers, an explanation of how this could have occurred. but the sad truth is, there are no answers. no good ones, anyway." "the mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school is a stark contrast to the feel you get walking thru this picturesque town. it almost feels like a norman rockwell painting. in fact, there's been one homicide in the last ten years." >>reporter: police say 20- year-old adam lanza, seen here in a photo from 2005.killed his mother in her newtown home, then forced his way into the school friday, and opened

fire, killing children and adults. lanza's aunt says she never imagined he could do such a thing. he was different, he was quiet, nice kid, good kid. in a statement, lanza's family says they share the grief of the community and the nation. tonight the people of newtown connecticut are coming out in huge numbers he will also be speaking at a vigil that is all happening tomorrow. in newton, conn., torry dunnin.. >> to remember the victims of yesterday's tragedy. kron 4's alecia reid has the latest.alecia. >> vicki these are some of the facts we have so faraccording to the medical examiner.everyone was shot more than once with a semi automatic rifle, some at close range. six adults were killed, all of them women. and of the 20 children, 12 were girls and 8 of them boys. all between 6 and 7

years old.there were 3 guns found at the scene. one of them that was used. a lawn gun, known as a bushmaster. this sea of people came out tonight for a candle light vigil -- honoring 27 year old victoria soto, who died trying to save her students. people are calling the 1st grade teacher a herofor hiding her students in a closet and putting herself between them and the gunman. there were other vigils in newtown connecticut tonight. this one --- outside the saint rose of lima church. hundreds of people signed memorials. signs like god bless the families are all around the town. and flowers are constantly being brought to the memorial near sandy hook elementary school. a family friend says he knew something was terribly wrong when he couldn't get in touch with the parents of one of the victims. >> we felt something

unusual because they didn't respond on the phone call messages. last night basically they called us and 2 wordsour son is not with us anymore. >>reporter: the chief medical examiner calls it the worst case he's seen in his career while this close knit community searches for answers, they say right now is a time for them to comfort each other. >> i think coming to these memorials, i think it's being close from one family to another and just being there. you know, just hugs. i don't think there are any words. >> sot - we're coming together with love and support for those families who have suffered this terrible loss. we're a caring place, we will put our arms around those families and around each other. we will find a way to heal. >>reporter: right now they may not have the right words to console the families that are hurting, but they

believe that the ---- that neigs share their pain, and are there to support them.vicki return tstatement from father lanza- tonight to remember the victims of the school shooting. kron four's jeff this was a statement released by the father of the gunman. candlelight vigils were held across the country to remember the victims. jeff bush was with a group in san francisco and talked to people directly affected by gun violence and this weeks shooting. >> several dozen gathered at the playground in dolores park at sundown. it was a fitting place to remember the young lives that were lost on friday. ) >> everyone was clearly moved by the east coast mass murder but stephanie dalton had a heavier heart than most. stephanie dalton knew one of the victims >> i work with jazz muscians and a very dear friend of mine, jazz saxaphonist, jimmy greene, who is a very beautiful person who's five year old girl, ana greene was lost. >>reporter: stephanie could not contain her emotion when she showed me the picture of her friend's daughter. >> ana was just bright and full and what everybody told me she had the whole world with two loving parents and a father who writes and plays the most beautiful music. >>reporter: megan scully has also been directly affected by a mass shooting. >> i lost my brother at 101 california 20 years ago to a similar incident. he was shot by a tech, dc 9 crazed man who also shot himselfonly took down eight people that time. >> jacqueline:

>>reporter: stephanie and megan say something has to be done. >> the people who took the time out of their saturday to come here in the cold and rainy weather say that it was important to do so not only to remember those who were lost but to open a dialog and say they never want to see something like this happen again. i'm jeff bush in san francisco, kron four news. >> in the east bay. police and youth groups partnered up today and held a successful gun buyback program. following the aftermath of the connecticut school massacre. hundreds of cars lined up in oakland to trade their guns for cash. kron4's jeff pierce has the details. >> one hundred and twenty one, one hundred and twenty two, one hundred and twenty three, one hundred and twenty four. >>reporter: olois simmons of youth uprising counted the cars waiting to turn in guns for cash saturday afternoon in oakland. nearly two hundred cars with guns in their trunks waited hours

for the opportunity to get two hundred dollars for each gun for as many as three guns. it was one of the most succesful gun by back programs ever held in the city. >> one gun off the street is good but the whole back side of a paddy wagon is even better. >>reporter: that success was credited to youth uprising's ability to organize and promote the event beyond what a police department is able to achieve. >> we had young people as the voice of it we did out reach hand to hand in communities with community members reaching out to each other, you get a drastically different outcome then when you have the police reaching out. >>reporter: the oakland police department was more than pleased to process and take possession of those firearms. >> a good amount of firearms here pistols, rifles shotguns. this is an example of an assault weapon that was turned in. >>reporter: some waiting in the long line of cars questioned having an event at 82nd and bancroft. being on the street here for two and and half hours they're not serious about taking the weapons. why couldn't we have it at the coliseum in a big parking

lot. >>reporter: but organizers had good reason to hold it in the east oakland neighborhood. >> this location is one of the most heavily impacted by gun violence and we wanted to be responsive to that. >>reporter: if there was a santa claus involved he remained anonymous. >> we has an individual donor who was incredibly generous and when it was clear to us that the turnout was exceeding our expectations he came in and actually tripled his donation. >>reporter: well over two hundred firearms were removed from the streets of the city. in oakland jeff pierce kron four news >> we will be right back. >> the horror at sandy hook elementary. no doubt difficult for adults to grasp. let alone children. kron four's philippe djegal sits down with a child psychiatrist who gives tips on how to walk your child through this difficult time. >> "children do know what happened in this era of social media, internet and 24/7 news coverage." >>reporter: so, child psychiatrist and director of the young adult and family center at u-c-s--f, doctor kim norman says parents should talk to their kids. find out how much your child knows about the newtown shooting. he says sometimes it's best to wait until your kids approach you. don't offer young children too much information upfront. ask them how they feel about the situation. and, pay close attention to body language. if they act out of the ordinary -- talk them through their discomfort. >> "it's very natural children will fear school. but of course, children have to go back to school." >>reporter:doctor norman

says escorting your child to school the first few days back is a good idea. ease them back in. at the safe time, keep them away from television and the internet for a while. >> "children should not watch the same images over and over again. that re- enforces the traumatic imagery in their minds and traumatizes them." >>reporter: and, as terrible as the shooting was. norman says it can be used as a learning lesson. >> "parents should be mindful of reassuring their children, but not promising them a non-realistic sense that it can never ever happen to them or anybody ever again. only that thank the heavens it's a very very rare event, and for every horrible person who committs an attrocious act like this, there are many more good people." >>reporter: norman says kids who have been exposed to excessive violence in the past. may be the most at risk here. if talking doesn't help. seek professional guidance. philippe djegal, kron four news. reand a school >> security expert advises parents to send their kids back to school after a tragic event. >> "parents need to remember

that the first thing they should do is to send their children to school. monday will be the safest day you could ever be in a school in this country because there's going to be a heightened awareness and heightened security measures. so that's critical. we saw waves of children stay home after columbine, we don't want to see that now." >> trump ensures parents. school is a safe place for children. there are reports >> house speaker john boehner proposed raising taxes for earners making more than one-million- dollars. a source says president obama who wants to hike taxes for households who make than 250-thousand- dollars has not accepted boehner's offer. however, the proposal indicates new progress in the looming fiscal cliff talks. boehner is still seeking more spending cuts than obama proposed. he has asked for a long- term increase in eligibility age for medicare and for lower costs-of-living adjustments for medicare. boehner's aide would not comment on the report. >> morgan hill police are searching for a man who

chased after a teenage girl yesterday. the same suspect is believed to have followed two other females in the last couple of weeks. this is a sketch of the suspect. he is described as a white male, short in stature and in his 30's. the suspect has been seen driving a white utility- style van.with two doors in the back and tinted windows. the 13-year-old girl told police, the suspect followed her in his van and then got out of the car and started running after her. she ran to a neighbor's home and called police. the van was last scene heading south on monterey road. >> police say two people are dead in an apparent murder-suicide. it happened last night near the excalibur hotel's front entrance on the las vegas strip. police say a man shot a woman and then turned the gun on himself. the woman, who worked at the hotel, was taken to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead. no one else was hurt. police are trying to establish the relationship between the shooter and the victim. >> in china, police arrested a farmer who stabbed 22 children and one adult outside an elementary school on friday. min ying-jun is in custody. authorities

describe min as possibly being mentally ill. the children are said to be between the ages of six and 12. none of the died, however two children had to be sent to hospitals outside the country for better care. authorities have not identified a motive. there have been a string of similar assaults against school children in china. one in 20-10 killed nearly 20 kids and injured more than 50 other people. otpolice arrested an oklahoma teenager on charges he plotted to bomb and shoot students inside a high school campus auditorium yesterday. the same day of the connecticut elementary school shooting. an arrest report says 18-year-old sammie chavez tried to convince others to help him lure students into the auditorium, and then planned to chain the doors shut and start shooting. authorities say chavez threatened to kill students who would *not help him. other reports show chavez planned to detonate a bomb once police arrived. the school district says students were never in danger. chavez is being held on one-million dollars bond.

brew the coffee you love -- stronger, bigger, or hotter -- with the keurig vue. >> we have continuing coverage on the elementary school massacre. that has left 28 dead. including 20 children. in newton connecticut yesterday police say 20-year-old adam lanza forced his way into an elementary school his mother taught at and killed 20 children and 6 adults who worked at the school. he was found dead presumbably by committing suicide. police found the shooter's mother dead at the home she shared with her son. there were multiple guns at the scene of the shooting. all registered to the mother. a brother of the gunman has been questioned and released

by police. the father of the gunman did not live with the family. the mother and father were divorced. but he did release a statement expressing his sorrow and disbelief. >> the governor has made a request to all of the citizens. >> what is important is love, come passion and compassion and in courage as it was demonstrated by the encourage -- saved lives from the teachers to the students. compassion shown from people around connecticut that arrived only wanting to help her. >> the coverage continues right after the break.

>> we continue the coverage of the second deadliest shooting. 20 small children and the six adults were the victims. they believe the shooter took his own life and the mother was also found processing the bodies. the governor of connecticut made an address to the tragedy. we continue coverage on a story that's shocked the community is now home to the second-deadliest school shooting ever in this country. adults were the victims of a gunman at connecticut's sandy hook elementary school. police believe the shooter also took his own life -- as well as the life of his mother, whose body was foundanderson cooper takes a look at what happened. >> "all units, the individual i have on the phone is continuing to hear what he believes to be gunshots." >>reporter: the first word was chilling. it only got worse.

>> "they're reporting multiple fatalities involved in this shooting at the elementary school." >>reporter: with each new report, the horror deepened. >> "reports say the number of dead, closer to 30 than to 20, and sadly most of them are children." >>reporter: every detail, every fact, brought more sadness. each fresh piece information, a part of the picture: a school, kindergarten through fourth grade. a sanctuary, that was supposed to be a place of safety-- torn apart. >> "she heard the intercom came on in the school and she heard a scream and she heard a gunshot -- two gunshots -- and then the school went into lockdown." >>reporter: a students teenage big brother. describing the sounds of a gunman on the loose at sandy hook elementary. >> "on and off duty troopers responded to the school and with newtown police immediately on arrival entered the school and began search of the building." >>reporter: they arrived to carnage. the killer. says a law enforcement source with detailed knowledge. was dressed for battle. in black fatigues. and armed for mass murder: with two pistols and a military-style rifle. in parts of the school students were told to hide in corners. teachers risked their own lives. to pull boys and girls to safety. >> "i'm just so grateful to the teacher who saved him."

"she definitely did. he had bullets going by him, and she grabbed him and another child and pulled them into a classroom." >>reporter: eventually the kids were evacuated to a nearby firehouse. where frantic parents descended. >> of"it was terrifying. i'm still terrified, i think i'm still in shock about it all. i still don't know everything that happened. i know that there are some people missing that they've been taking to the hospital." >>reporter: his son was okay. his son's teacher was alive as well. twenty other children and six adults were killed. the dead believed to include sandy hook's school psychologist and the principal. police discovered another adult victim-- the gunman's mother, reportedly at a home in newtown. the gunman too is dead. police say they fired no shots. a tight-knit community, including a nurse who lived nearby and rushed to help. shocked, distraught. >> "reporter: i see you've been crying. >> "yes." >> "reporter: is it because of what you saw?" >> "one of the cops said its, you know, the worse thing he'd seen in his

entire career, but it was when they told the parents -- all these parents were waiting for their children to come out. they thought that they were, you know, still alive. there's 20 parents that were just told that their children are dead. it was awful. >>reporter: one of the children who did not come home that day - six year old emilie parker. her father - robbie parker - stood before the cameras. he wanted to let others know about his little girl. and he talked of.forgiveness. >> my family is one of the families that lost a child yesterday in the sandy hook elementary shooting in connecticut. i have been contacted by so many people, agencies wanting to know how we are doing. and i thought that this would be the best way to share these feelings with everybody. first of all, i would like to offer our deepest

condolences to all the families that were the most impacted by this shooting is a horrific tragedy. all of all our hearts and prayers go out to them. this includes the family of the shooter. emily was bright, creative, and very loving. emily wanted to try new things. she loved to use her talents to touch others in she was an exceptional artist. she always said pencils, markers and she never missed an opportunity to draw a picture or make a card for those around her. i cannot count the number of times that emmeline noticed feel someone said or frustrated and would rush to find some paper. she would draw them a picture or write them an encouraging note. she was the type of person that would light up a room.

she always had something kind to say about anyone. and her laugh and the strength that the example that she showed off and her love cash was remarkable. she is an incredible person. i am so blessed to be heard dad. >> we're learning more about the victims, in friday's connecticut school massacre. like emilie, all of the 20 children were either six or seven years old. >> investigators in connecticut are searching for any possible clue about what may have motivated friday's massacre. they're combing sandy hook elementary school and the home of alleged shooter adam lanza's mother who police say the guns used in the shooting were registered to. at first reports were xsurfacing that said the mother was frequented shooting ranges. now authorities still investigation say that is untrue. just recently police announced they found evidence of a motive at the family home. but have not gone into detail.

>> shortly after friday's horrific shootings, police and swat teams descended on en it's closed off by police. >>reporter: and investigators are now suggesting that they are piecing together information leading to possible answers about how and why this happened. lieutenant paul vance of the connecticut state police saying, in his words, "good evidence" is being recovered -- but he did not go into detail. in terms of the weapons used, we do know that there were three weapons recovered at the scene of the shooting, near the suspect's body. there were two handguns and a semi-automatic rifle. cnn has been reporting that those guns were purchased by his mother, nancy lanza. there's not much we know about nancy lanza. we spoke to a neighbor earlier in the day, and she said that she

knew her, but that there was nothing out of the ordinary that she could see. >> she was like a normal, anybody else in this neighborhood, you know, decorate the house, and the house was always pristine. you know, she was just like any other housewife. >>reporter: as for adam lanza, former classmates describe him as being a smart student, someone who was quiet, kept to himself. a neighbor who knew him in recent years described him as "troubled." mary snow, cnn, newtown,, conn. >> connecticut. we're learning that president obama will be traveling to connecticut tomorrow. the president made an emotional address to the nation yesterday in the wake of the school massacre. in his speech, president obama fought back tears. but also alluded to future action on laws on gun control. as we >> as a country, we have been through this too many times if it is an elementary school in connecticut, a shopping mall in portland,

oregon or a temple in wisconsin or a movie theater said. a very emotional these are our neighborhoods and these are our children we are going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this. regardless of the politics. >> a very emotional president. the white house said president obama supports the reinstatement of a federal ban on assault weapons. the ban expired in 2004, so there are now just restrictions on assault weapons, such as limited bullet capacity. enoug >> in a heated interview on piers morgan we hear more details of the massacre. as gun advocate john r. lott, junior says banning guns is not the answer to the rash of shooting massacres over the past few years or the rampage at sandy hook. let's take a listen. >> piers morgan: he fired over 100 rounds in several minutes. with this apparently harmless assault rifle

with the largest screen. he went to the one movie theater that banned guns. >> the topic of gun control getting very heated. in connecticut gun laws are very strict. which is how authorities were able to quickly link the guns involved in the school shooting registered to that of the suspected shooters mother. as we mentioned before police recovered three weapons from the elementary school: a semi-automatic rifle which is what is on your screen and two handguns. >> today in a san francisco. a gun buy-back program rewarded those who turned in a gun. with hundreds of dollars in cash. kron 4's mike pelton shows us the driving force behind the program. the impact of >> dozens came out dropping out guns for hundreds of dollars but their main focus is getting these off the streets. >> there is a 22 in the desert to 12 pages. >> lots of guns for cash. >> i want to get rid of these, and heat venting. >> the skype brought three
